Dale Poteet, BS, MBA
Metallurgical engineer with demonstrated expertise in heat treating technology from twenty years with John Deere, five years as Vice President and General Manager of Radyne Corporation and eighteen years as a Metallurgical Engineering Consultant and Manufacturer' Representative selling heat treating, forge heating, sintering, and brazing equipment. Founded and co-owned Advanced Heat Treat Corp., a high technology commercial heat treating company dedicated to ion nitriding.
Highly experienced in problem solving through materials applications analysis and failure analysis.
Extensive experience in total company management as well as the specific areas of strategic planning, marketing and sales, manufacturing engineering, and manufacturing.
MAJOR PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
ENGINEERING HIGHLIGHTS
- Implemented automatic control of carburizing and carbonitriding furnaces using programmable controllers and infrared analyses of %CO, %CO2, and %CH4 for continuous and batch furnaces. Also implemented O2 probes for controlling less critical carburizing processes.
- Developed ion nitriding process procedures to make it commercially viable. Purchased, installed, started up, and personally operated two ion nitriders as well as metallurgical laboratory support equipment.
- Determined the need, developed the ROI, and purchased more than 75 machines for heat treating and inspection.
- Extensive experience in: specifying materials and process applications for experimental and production parts; process capability studies; failure analyses (more than 700 conducted); material and machining complaint investigations; process control for all heat treatments including carburizing, carbonitriding, nitriding, induction hardening, annealing, normalizing, stress relieving, hot flattening, through hardening, austempering, press quenching, and tempering.
- Conceived and implemented gear hardening through the use of high power density single shot induction heating as opposed to tooth-by-tooth scanning. The resulting productivity improvement was from 1 gear in 20 minutes to 1 gear in 1 minute.
- Contributing author and reviewer to ASM and wrote the chapter on "Measurement of Case Depth" in the Heat Treat volume of the Metals Handbook series published by ASM in 1982.
- Share authorship of the book "Carburizing and Carbonitriding" published by ASM in 1976.
- Occasional speaker at the bi-annual ASM National Conference and Exposition.
- Speaker several times at annual regional SAE conference on heat treating to teach basic heat treat metallurgy.
